It’s Not Just About Pesticides: Organic vs. Conventionally Grown…

lean body, organic, conventional, pesticides, organic vs. conventional, dirty dozen, environmental group, environmental dangers, belly fat,To buy, or not to buy. Organic vs. conventional produce. How do you decide. After all, there is still quite a lot of debate regarding the benefits of organic over conventionally grown produce.

Then there’s the extra cost to consider.

But it’s not just about the cost, and the nasty pesticides and herbicides. Who wants that in our body anyway. No one is interested in messing up their hormones and creating belly fat and Estrogenic issues that cause weird health issues. No thanks!

Interestingly, there is a great deal of discussion regarding the little-known hideous outcomes to our soil and water systems that get impacted when we use artificial fertilizers and pesticides to grow our produce. Click below for a full discussion on the

Now, we can’t always buy organic so I compiled 2 lists. The produce you need to buy organic, and the others that are okay to buy conventional.

Buy these organic the dirty dozen:

According to the Environmental Working Group’s 2010 report “Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides,” strawberries are third among the 12 foods upon which pesticide residues are most frequently found (commonly referred to as the “Dirty Dozen” list). You can sidestep these pesticide-associated health risks by not buying or consuming the following foods unless they are grown organically:

2 Peaches

3 Strawberries (okay organic frozen)

4 Apples

5 Blueberries (okay organic frozen)

6 Nectarines

7 Bell Peppers

8 Spinach (okay organic frozen)

9 Kale

10 Cherries

11 Potatoes

12 Grapes

Here’s what is fascinating…

If pesticides are only present on the surfaces of your fruits and vegetables, you can remove most of them with careful washing with a good (chemical-free )produce wash and then a very thorough rinsing.

But it’s impossible to remove pesticides that have been incorporated into the fruits and vegetables during their growth cycle (such as strawberries) because the soil is inoculated with the pesticide and the plant sucks it up with the nutrients and water.

You cannot wash off chemicals and pesticides that are systemic (all through the produce).

So be careful when shopping and avoid the “dirty dozen” items above…

Also, read labels of origin. (California farmers grow 90% of the nation’s strawberries.) If you can’t afford organic strawberries (or any berries for that matter), take a pass. The dangers outweigh the benefits. Or buy frozen organic berries. These are safe and quite nutritious.

When you can’t eat organically-grown foods, choose these “Clean 15” conventionally-grown foods which contain the least amount of pesticide residues:

1 Onion

2 Avocado

3 Sweet Corn (watch this one RE the GMO issue)

4 Pineapple

5 Mango

6 Sweet Peas

7 Asparagus

8 Kiwifruit

9 Cabbage

10 Eggplant

11 Cantaloupe

12 Watermelon

13 Grapefruit

14 Sweet Potato

15 Honeydew Melon

So there you go. If we all ban together and refuse to buy dangerous conventionally grown produce then farmers will be forced to consider safer growing and farming techniques. Our food will have more nutrition and minerals and we will be leaner and healthier for it.
